Dr Ivo Burum is founder and CEO of Burum Media and a journalist and award winning television, writer, director, executive producer with more than 30 years experience. He’s worked internationally in more than 40 countries across a range of program styles including: documentary, reality, docudrama, magazine, consumer affairs and frontline current affairs series such as Foreign Correspondent and 60 Minutes.
A pioneer of the user-generated style of production in Australia, Ivo spent three decades empowering citizens, students and journalists with skills to produce their own stories for self-shot television series such as Race Around OZ, Home Truths, Nurses and After the Fires.
Ivo developed the lessons learned on these series into his current mobile journalism workshops, which he is delivering across Australia and internationally in countries such as Denmark, Norway, UK, China, Timor and Myanmar. Ivo has trained in excess of 400 print journalists to mojo and more than a thousand students to create user-generated stories. His mojo workshops with remote Indigenous communities are regarded as ground breaking.
Here’s what mainstream media are saying about Ivo’s Smart Mojo workshops:
“ People liked the course and think video is fun. They now produce video voluntarily! Their self-confidence and confidence in the stories they make is rising and they are interested in their stats. This attitude is spreading and several who did not attend the course are wondering if there will be another one. It has been a very uplifting experience in a time when we are cutting budgets and jobs”.
Ivo is invited regularly to speak at conferences on mobile journalism and his PhD research on convergent mobile storytelling. His publications include peer reviewed papers and chapters on convergent journalism; an iBook about how to mojo; numerous articles in industry magazines and he has just co-written Mojo – the mobile journalism handbook, a book and companion web site on mobile and convergent journalism (in press).
Ivo consults with mainstream media internationally on convergent storytelling. Recently he spent a year in Denmark working in Ekstra Bladet’s online newsroom providing mobile training and helping develop content across their mobile storytelling and web TV platforms.
Dr Burum lectures into multimedia journalism programs. He has just completed a term as Unit Chair of Multimedia Journalism at Deakin University, where he developed and taught a practical mobile journalism unit. Ivo is currently finalising a large government funded Indigenous mobile journalism workshop and is producing a series of training videos on mobile journalism.
